Parent Letter

This week in class your child will be presented the meaning of a sense of place. We are learning about knowing where you are and where you can be. He/she will have the chance to participate in an activity called Ball Run Fun, where the kids can place a ball to see which one comes down faster along with placing the ball in different areas such as behind, underneath, on top, inside etc. (sense of place)

Having a sense of place is important because children need to foster relationships with places; specifically, natural places with the complexity that only Mother Nature can design. These early relationships create memories of a sense of home or place the activity will be outside so the children will have fresh air and are out of the classroom setting; free to roam around.

To reinforce your child’s learning at home, you can use the same materials we used in class today which is a wall board such as ply wood and water bottles that are connected and a variety of sized balls; or you can be resourceful and come up with common household materials to use. First place the ball on top of the board to see how fast it will come down. Have everyone your child put the ball in a different place, but first ask him/her to predict what he/she thinks will happen before the ball is dropped. This is a fun activity that your child can include his/her friends in if they choose.

Thank you,

 Ms. Leal
